Spiders in Southern MD? They've Got to Go.

Which spiders are just annoying, which ones actually matter, and when to call a pro

All jokes aside, Southern Maryland's humid summers and wooded lots make it prime real estate for spiders — and Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's County homeowners see a noticeable uptick every year once the weather warms up. Most of what you'll find crawling across your porch or tucked into a window corner is harmless. But a few species are worth knowing how to spot.

The Spiders You'll Actually See Around Southern MD

  • Wolf spiders — Large, fast-moving, and often mistaken for something more dangerous. They don't spin webs to catch prey; they hunt on foot, which is exactly why they end up inside garages and basements.
  • Orb weavers — The classic big, symmetrical web-builders you'll see strung across porch railings and shrubs by late summer. Intimidating to look at, but not aggressive toward people.
  • Cellar spiders (daddy long-legs) — Thin, spindly, and usually found in damp basements, crawl spaces, and corners that don't get disturbed often.
  • House spiders — Small, common, and the reason you find webs in window corners no matter how often you clean.

If you're worried about something more serious — specifically brown recluse spiders — we've put together a full identification guide here: Brown Recluse Spiders in Southern MD.

Why Spiders Show Up in the First Place

Spiders don't invade homes at random — they follow food. If you're seeing more spiders than usual, it's often a sign of a bigger insect problem: flies, gnats, ants, or other small pests they're feeding on. Clutter, woodpiles stacked against the house, and gaps around foundations and utility lines all make it easier for them to get inside and stay hidden.

Simple Prevention Steps

  • Seal gaps around windows, doors, and where utility lines enter the home
  • Keep firewood and debris piles away from the foundation
  • Reduce outdoor lighting near entry points — light attracts the insects spiders feed on
  • Vacuum and knock down webs regularly in basements, garages, and window corners

When to Call a Professional

An occasional spider is normal. A recurring problem — especially indoors, in multiple rooms, or alongside other pest activity — usually means there's an underlying food source or entry point that needs to be addressed at the root, not just swept away.

If spiders (or anything with more than six legs) have overstayed their welcome in your Calvert, Charles, or St. Mary's County home, give Southern MD Boys Pest Control a call at 443-802-1022 for an inspection.
