Spotting Termites in Your Southern MD Home
Is Your Southern Maryland Home at Risk? 5 Signs of a Termite Infestation

For homeowners in Southern Maryland, termites are a constant and serious threat. These silent destroyers can cause thousands of dollars in damage before you even realize they're there. Don't wait until it's too late. Knowing the signs of an infestation is your best defense. Here are five key indicators that your home might have termites.
1. Mud Tubes on Your Foundation or Walls
Termites, particularly the subterranean kind common in our area, need a moist environment to survive. They build pencil-sized mud tubes out of soil and wood particles to travel from their underground colony to the wooden structures of your home. Look for these tubes along your home’s foundation, in your crawl space, or even on interior walls. If you break one open and see small, cream-colored insects scurrying inside, you have a termite problem.
2. Discarded Wings or "Swarmers"
A termite "swarm" is when a colony sends out winged reproductive termites (called swarmers) to establish new colonies. This usually happens in the spring, but can occur at other times of the year. If you find small, discarded wings on your windowsills, floors, or in spiderwebs, it's a strong sign of a nearby colony. These wings are often the first visible evidence of an infestation.
3. Damaged or "Hollow" Wood
Termites eat wood from the inside out, so the exterior of the wood often looks fine, but the damage within can be extensive. Tap on wood beams, floors, or walls with a screwdriver handle. If you hear a dull, hollow sound, it could be a sign that termites have been feasting. You might also notice bubbling or uneven paint on walls or sagging floors and ceilings. This is a sign of advanced damage.
4. Frass (Termite Droppings)
Drywood termites, though less common than subterranean termites in our region, are another threat. They don’t build mud tubes, but they do leave behind small, pellet-like droppings known as "frass." These tiny pellets are often found in small piles near the site of the infestation. The frass can look like sawdust or fine sand.
5. Pinpoint Holes in Drywall
If you see tiny, pinpoint holes in your drywall or wallpaper, it could be an exit point for termites. These small holes are often where termites emerge to swarm. If you see them, it's a good indication that you have an active colony in your walls.
